34 D.I.Y. Hanging Flower Baskets

I love Flowers! I plant them everywhere. Nothing better than pops of color and fragrance throughout the yard.

One place I love to put hanging pots of flowers is in our screened pool enclosure. I bought a beautiful one last year and wanted to add a few more....But you know what? They are really expensive! $24.99?

Love the Look but Not the Price!

Now my friends...you know I like to save money whenever I can. You can read the different ways I save here. So paying almost $25 dollars....was not the plan for me...no way! Instead I'm making my own!

Do It Yourself ~ Hanging Flower Basket

Bargains on Plants

Did you know that Lowes and Home Depot clearance plants on a regular basis? The plants don't always look very good... but many of them just need some T.L.C.,

Find out where your local store puts plants on clearance and ALWAYS look there first.

Ask a manager the rotation schedule so you know when a new batch of clearance plants will be available.

Look At These Deals!

Yes..you read right! Plants for .50 cents and $1.50. I buy as many plants as I can this way!

Choosing a Planter

I love the hanging wire baskets with inserts. The inserts can be replaced later if needed.  (I have yet to replace any...and have used the baskets for several years)

( I bought two of these for $4.98 but wish I had spent the $9.99 because the chain is rusting...you get what you pay for my Nana always said...)

Plastic pots are also a great choice.

Choosing Plants

Choose plants that like the same sun conditions. For example full sun with other full sun plants.
Other than that...the sky is the limit!

I love multi~color baskets so I choose many different colored flowers. If pink is your favorite color ~ choose different varieties of pink flowers. Create an arrangement that puts a smile on your face!!

Above I planted
  • a - Geraniums
  • b - Petunias
  • c- Spider Plant

Above I planted
  • a - Impatiens
  • b - Petunias
  • c -  Dahlberg Daisy
  • d - Geraniums

Beautiful Baskets at a Fraction of the Cost!

My baskets were much cheaper than the ready made ones...I also think they are stunning...that is just my opinion.

Breakdown
  • 2 baskets @ $4.98 each = $9.96
  • 2 Geraniums @ $2.00 each = $4.00 (clearance)
  • 4 Petunias @ .50 cents = $2.00 (clearance)
  • 1 Impatiens @ .50 cents - .50 cents (clearance)
  • 1 Dahlberg Daisy @ $2.49 = $2.49
  • 1 Spider Plant transplanted from other plant in yard
  • potting soil - had on hand
So for $18.95 ~  I got TWO baskets instead of one for $24.99

About $9.50 for one!! At a price like that I can afford to make MORE!!

It's a beautiful day...I think I'll go make some more!

  9. They look so pretty! A much more reasonable price than what the store wanted to charge as well. I look at the plants on clearance, but since I stink with plants, I'm afraid I can't offer enough TLC for them. ;-) Thanks so much for linking up at the Real Family Fun link party! Hope to see you next week.

  10. These are great ideas. I have two hanging flower baskets just like yours. FYI, my chains started to rust too, so I bought some Rustoleum spray paint in black and painted them this year. They look great...brand new.

  13. A woman after my own heart! I do the same thing. BTW, 2 of mine that I bought for $5.88 have rusting chains. When I'm done with them in the fall, I want to spray paint them for next year to see if that helps with the rust.

Thanks for sharing this at Fabulously Frugal Thursday, and for reminding me I have 3 empty baskets on my back porch.

  14. Your containers for a small cost look lovely. I too pot up my own containers using small sized plants because they do grow and fill in over the summer. I always use geraniums because they can take a late frost and are forgiving it one forgets to water them.
The rest of the plants in the pots are whatever catches my fancy at the nursery.
I touch up my metal urns and chains all the time with spray paint.

    1. I am going to try the spray paint since several people have suggested it!
I love geraniums for the same reason...very forgiving!

  16. Looks great! I've tried hanging baskets the last two years and they just never seem to look very healthy. I water them, and put some plant food in the container. I don't know what I'm doing.
